Your Place in Today's Medicine: A Resident Symposium

Maintaining Your Professionalism; Mastering Your Business

 "One of the single most important lectures I have received during my medical training." Ethan C. Richard, MD, past attendee, Community and Family Medicine Resident Physician (2008), University of Missouri Kansas City.

Southern Medical Association's seminar Your Place in Today’s Medicine (YPTM) is designed for resident physicians and offered in conjunction with graduate medical teaching institutions such as

  • University of Kentucky College of Medicine
  • University of Oklahoma College of Medicine
  • University of Tennessee College of Medicine
  • University of Missouri School of Medicine
  • Geisinger Medical Center
  • University of South Carolina College of Medicine
  • And many others

Many GME programs host this seminar annually for their senior residents to aid them in making career decisions. This seminar can help satisfy the ACGME general curriculum requirements in Systems Based Practice, Professionalism, Interpersonal and Communications Skills, and Practice Based Learning. In support of this effort, SMA administers pre- and post-tests at this seminar to gauge residents' learning and supplies the results to the GME office and program directors. In addition, sponsorship of our live seminar comes with 30-days access to the online YPTM seminar as a post-meeting educational tool for those residents that can not attend the live seminar. It also serves as a post-meeting resource for residents who attended the live seminar to validate their learning and provides program directors, challenged by the residents’ clinical schedules, with an educational option that does not compromise busy schedules and allows for self-directed, flexible learning.

Our YPTM online seminar is also available as a stand-alone educational program with 60-days access for teaching institutions without limit on the number of residents that may participate. The web seminar follows the curriculum for the live seminar and also offers our pre- and post-testing services. You can view Part I - Current Trends in Healthcare.

Purpose and Objectives:  The purpose of this workshop is to expose residents and fellows to all of the aspects of practice management that are becoming increasingly important in a managed care environment.  At the conclusion of this workshop, participants should be better able to:

  • Understand the healthcare environment we live in today, the historical events that created it, and how it all impacts the way you will practice medicine;
  • Evaluate managed care contracting strategies and employment contracting issues to prevent legal problems that can cause loss of revenue and dissatisfaction with your practice.
  • Calculate your costs per procedure to empower you to negotiate the right managed care contracts and become fiscally responsible, enabling you to focus your energy on quality patient care;
  • Realize the regulatory requirements and restrictions placed upon today’s physician.
  • Examine and Compare the various components of running a clinical practice, including staff management, office policies, patient communications, and ethical standards.
  • Evaluate the impact communications has on providing quality patient care, running a successful practice, and staying out of the courtroom.
  • Recognize the ethical responsibilities you have to your patients, community, and peers as a practicing physician.

If you are interested in your institution sponsoring the live YPTM seminar or the web YPTM seminar, or would just like more information, please contact SMA Professional Development at 800-423-4992, ext. 118.
