SMA Disclosure Policy and Conflict of Interest Resolution:
It is SMA's policy that all individuals involved with the planning and implementation of the content of an SMA CME/CE activity are required to disclose to the audience (1) any relevant financial relationships with entities producing healthcare goods or services consumed by or used on patients, and (2) unlabeled/unapproved uses of drugs or devices discussed in their presentation. Conflicts of Interest will be resolved prior to the activity and disclosures will be noted on a slide at the beginning of the lectures and in the program information.

Purpose/Need:

Research on stem cells is advancing knowledge about how an organism develops from a single cell and how healthy cells replace damaged cells in adult organisms.  This promising area of science is also leading scientists to investigate the possibility of cell-based therapies to treat disease.  Stem cells are one of the most fascinating areas of biology today.  But like many expanding fields of scientific inquiry, research on stem cells raises scientific questions as rapidly as it generates new discoveries.

2. Define embryonic and adult stem cells.
3. Outline the potential therapeutic implications of stem cell research.
