New NOF Guidelines Discussed During
SMA Osteoporosis Conference
February 21, 2008

On February 21, 2008, The National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) released its new clinical recommendations for low bone mass and osteoporosis incorporating absolute fracture risk.  The document entitled a Clinician’s Guide to Prevention and Treatment of Osteoporosis represents a major breakthrough in the way healthcare providers evaluate and treat people with low bone mass or osteoporosis and the risk of fractures.

It was opportune that the Southern Medical Association was holding its 11th Annual Conference on Osteoporosis on February 21-24, 2008 with faculty experts on-site who gave an immediate response to the guidelines.  Conference Chair Dr. Ronald C. Hamdy, Professor of Medicine and Director of the Osteoporosis Center at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, gathered experts - Dr. E. Michael Lewiecki, a contributor to the new NOF guidelines and the Director of New Mexico Clinical Research & Osteoporosis Center in Albuquerque, and Dr. Nelson Watts, Professor of Medicine and Director of the University of Cincinnati Bone Health and Osteoporosis Center, to come together and talk about the impact of the new guidelines.  The conversation was captured and is presented to you now as part of SMA’s Ask the Experts series.
