Overview
During the last century, cardiovascular disease (CVD) has mushroomed from a relatively minor disease worldwide to a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Unfortunately, early CVD, characterized by changes in the blood vessel walls, is often well established even before specific blood pressure, lipid, and glucose thresholds have been crossed. Even after we diagnose these disease states, effective management of hypertension as well as hyperlipidemia and diabetes remain dismal. Thus, the management of global cardiovascular risk is essential if we are to have a meaningful impact on CVD morbidity and mortality and we must address each individual cardiovascular risk factor including hypercholesterolaemia, hyperglycemia, and hypertension.
