Need: More than 2 million burn injuries occur each year in the United States. Seventy- five thousand of these injuries result in hospitalization, and some 10 thousand result in death. Positive outcomes are enhanced through immediate intervention of first responders, initial care provided by emergency department personnel, and also long-term management coordinated by a multidisciplinary team. Proper care of patients with burn injuries requires specialized education and training.
Purpose: The Southern Medical Association and the burn centers across the southeast have designed a forum for case discussion, current interventions, protocols, treatment modalities, research, and the psychosocial needs of burn survivors.
