In the field of trauma and critical care, it is essential to share the knowledge and skills of burn care providers. This annual peer-reviewed conference is designed for a multidisciplinary approach to improving patient outcomes, enhancing quality of life, and evaluating therapeutic approaches as well as future trends. After participating in this conference, attendees should be better prepared to:

  • Discuss the initiatives of the American Burn Association for education, research, advocacy, and burn care quality improvement
  • Identify the sources of a national estimate on the annual incidence of fire and burn death and medically treated burn injury
  • Evaluate and refine institutional disaster response, review experience of multiple disasters, and discuss the effects on healthcare professionals and responders
  • Discuss the safety and efficacy of a bowel management system
  • Describe therapeutic options based on burn depth and evaluate dressings to achieve the best outcome for the patient
  • Identify the incidence and etiology of burn injuries, and incorporate new modalities for pain management and burn scar management into current practice patterns
  • Summarize burn care processes from first responder to reconstruction, rehabilitation and community integration

  • Compare unit-based versus service-based models of pediatric burn care
  • Understand importance of communication with hospital administration
  • Discuss the role of Volumetric Diffusive Respirator, high PEEP, and other ventilator strategies in the management of severe inhalation injury in pediatric burn patients
  • Discuss treatment modalities in highly resistant nosocomial pneumonias in critically ill burn patients
  • Apply rehabilitation and prosthetic guidelines for an individual with burns and amputation(s)
  • Discuss the relevance and pertinent implications of using alternative wound care for burns
  • Describe bilateral ischemic optic neuropathy complications
  • Analyze the expression of novel innate immunity genes in severely injured burn patients
  • Identify alcohol and drug risk factors for burn injury
  • Identify the process and methodology of a unit based practice council for the hospital or nursing unit
  • Describe emotional suffering as it relates to physical pain
  • Assess outreach programs, rehabilitation curricula and nutritional support
  • Develop new processes for staff efficiency, accountability and retention
  • Apply current coding guidelines and maximize reimbursement outcomes
