Need: Patient centered care, provided through a multidisciplinary team approach, first originated in burn treatment decades ago. Today, patient survival from severe burns is at an all-time best. This means that patients experiencing large body surface area burns are in need of a fully cooperative and integrated system of care for best outcomes. All burn team members regardless of specific discipline have a role and contribution to successful burn rehabilitation. To this end, it is important for all members of the burn care team to have a proper perspective and appreciation of each other’s professional input to this care. Although burn therapists are primarily responsible for the physical rehabilitation aspects of patient care, all team members contribute vitally to overall patient success.

This Burn Rehabilitation Symposium will explore the many and varied ways that members of the burn team participate in burn rehabilitation either directly or indirectly. Team members will also learn of the support needed by the rehabilitation staff in order to achieve successful patient outcomes. Furthermore, it is important for all burn staff to learn from patients and family members the impact that such care can have on their lives. Participants will be encouraged to ask and discuss important questions to gain a better appreciation for the total rehabilitation process.

At the conclusion of this symposium, participants will be better prepared to:

  • Describe the theory that underlies burn rehabilitation principles and how each member contributes to this design;
  • Discuss patient and family member perspectives of the rehabilitation process;
  • Recognize the significance of burn rehabilitation participation for improved outcomes;
  • Demonstrate a better relationship with all burn team members.

Target Audience: This symposium is designed for all burn healthcare professionals including physicians and surgeons, nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, psychologists, social workers and pastoral care providers who participate in the care of patients with burn injury.

Symposium Outline: Lectures by representatives of various burn disciplines will be presented that address topics relevant to the rehabilitation of patients with burn injury. Faculty will stimulate thought processes to provoke questions. Panel discussions will be held to address obstacles affecting integrated patient rehabilitation care.
