Join us for the premier educational event of the Southern Region. This will be an informative and energizing learning resource for all burn care disciplines at any level of experience – in a casual learning environment. The curriculum focuses on evidence-based medicine, treatment modalities, rehabilitation advances, disaster planning, prevention education, research, outreach programs, and burn units’ work in progress. This will be an exciting time to collectively discuss and influence the direction of future burn care.

GAP/NEEDS

Burn care necessitates multiple treatment modalities, each with varying sequencing, for different parts of a burn wound, depending on the burn depth. Treating burn and wound patients requires comprehension and application of critical care guidelines from the acute onset of injury through discharge and rehabilitation. The incidence of injuries requiring medical treatment was estimated at 450,000 in 2008. This educational intervention will bring the latest research findings and best practices of treatment to this specialized ‘team approach’ care system. Current policies, guidelines, scientific literature, and centralized communication among burn experts are crucial components to create a change in the learners’ competence and performance in practice approach unique to burn care and recovery.

Purpose and Learning Objectives

A multidisciplinary, systematic approach to burn care assessment, management and rehabilitation is essential for improving patient outcomes and enhancing quality of life. After participating in this peer-reviewed conference, attendees should be better prepared to implement current treatments, apply evidence-based practices, and execute burn prevention strategies and community outreach programs. After participating in this activity, participants should have increased knowledge and be more competent to:

• Discuss advances in burn care research
• Implement an evidence-based wound management program
• Describe surgical interventions, scar and pain management
• Explain infection control, nutritional support and rehabilitation strategies
• Comprehend positive effects of prevention programs, rehabilitative camps and community re-integration

Target Audience

General surgeons, plastic surgeons, emergency medicine physicians, surgical residents, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, occupational and physical therapists, social workers, case managers, psychologists, nutritionists, rehabilitation personnel, prevention educators, burn technicians, and other personnel involved in burn care.
