Abstract Information / Instructions

 

You are invited to participate in Southern Medical Association’s
Annual Scientific Assembly, August 7-9, 2008, in Nashville, TN.

Submissions are now closed for 2008.

 

General Information - Abstract Submissions

Deadline: Applications for ORAL presentations must be received by/on September 24, 2007.  Applications for POSTER presentations must be received by/on February 8, 2008.  All applications must be submitted on-line (no faxed or mailed copies will be reviewed).

Submission Type: Indicate your preferred method of presentation- oral presentation, or poster presentation. Also, indicate if you are willing to present the abstract as a poster if NOT accepted for an oral presentation.

Review Process/Notification: The Selections Committee will review all submissions, and the presenting author will be notified by email of acceptance and presentation type by October 31 for Oral submissions and by February 29 for Poster submissions. 

Publication: Abstracts accepted are subject to peer-review for publication in the Southern Medical Journal. SMA is also interested in publishing papers presented at the meeting. Information for Authors is available on the SMJ website. Selection, editing and possible abridgment remain the prerogative of the editors.

Fees and Expenses: All applications (oral or poster) must be accompanied by a mandatory non-refundable $50 application fee.  Abstracts without this fee will NOT be reviewed.  In addition, presenters attending the meeting must complete a registration form and pay the appropriate registration fees for the meeting.  The Registration Fee for Medical Students, Residents, and Fellows is $150 and the fee for Physician Faculty/Practitioners is $425. 

Audio/Visual Provided:  All oral presentations must use PowerPoint (or equivalent).  The necessary equipment for such presentations will be provided by SMA in every meeting room.  35mm slides will not be permitted

CME Credit: The Southern Medical Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

 

Oral Presentations

Oral Abstract applications should be submitted for one of 5 conference tracks

  1. Surgery/Plastic Surgery/Oncology – may include:
    • Medical or surgical management of head/neck cancer
    • Medical or surgical management of breast cancer
    • Medical or surgical management of melanoma
    • Medical or surgical management of cervical cancer
    • Disparities in the treatment of cancer patients
  2. Women’s Health – may include:
    • New Contraception
    • New areas in obstetrics
    • Office procedures
  3. Internal Medicine – may include:
    • Preoperative Evaluation
    • Cardiology: CHF; cardiac arrhythmias in the office; ACS;
      invasive/noninvasive stratification; treatment of senior patients
    • Infectious Disease: MRSA/hospital and community; Update in antibiotics;
      skin/soft tissue infections
    • Emergent/Urgent Care in physician’s clinic
    • Neurology: Carotid artery disease-stenting; stroke protocols; stroke
      prevention; stroke treatment
    • Rheumatology: serology and new markers, crystal arthritis, contrast
      presentation in the young and elderly
    • Palliative care/pain management
    • Psychiatry: pharmacologics; anxiety disorder, adult/pediatric ADHD, depression
    • Imaging Multimodalities: PET, MRI, CT Antio – what test to order
    • Adolescent health care issues
    • Athletic Screening/pre-op evaluation
    • Sleep disorders/fatigue
    • Gastroenterology disorders
    • COPD/Asthma, Respiratory
    • Diabetes; Hypertension; Metabolic Syndrome
  4. Dermatology – Presentations related to medical and surgical management of diseases of the skin, as well as subspecialties of dermatologic diseases. Dermatopathologic cases should be submitted to the Zola Cooper Seminar – call SMA for details.
  5. Orthopaedics/Trauma/Critical Care – Care of patients with multiple systems injury requires the combined input of multi-disciplinary specialties including, but not limited to, general surgery and critical care, orthopaedics, neurosurgery, emergency physicians, reconstructive surgery, physiatry, and nursing. Abstracts submitted for this track should be presentations related to care of and/or case studies of multiple systems injuries.

 

Poster Presentations

  • Poster presentations may be submitted for all specialties.
  • Poster submissions are limited to individuals, educational facilities, and hospitals.  No commercial poster exhibits are permitted.
  • Poster setup will be on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning, August 6-7.  Posters should remain on display through the entire meeting (Thurs-Sat) and may be dismantled on Saturday afternoon.
  • Freestanding poster boards of 4’ vertical x 6’ horizontal will be provided.
  • Authors must provide a heading which includes the title of the poster, author(s) and affiliation for the poster.
  • Posters should be affixed by push pins or other fasteners supplied by the presenter.

 

Application Instructions

  1. Applications must be received by the deadlines listed above.
  2. The individual listed as presenter will receive all correspondence from the Association, via email.
  3. The body of the abstract should be not more than 300 words and organized as follows: a) introduction or purpose to the work or case described; b) description of the work performed or the study methods; c) summary of the results and/or clinical relevance, and d) conclusions reached.
  4. The Association reserves the right to withdraw a paper/poster at any time.
