While many achieve the scientific applications of their research, they sometimes fall short in transferring their research from the lab to the scientific paper so that it is acceptable for publication. Levine Museum of the New SouthLevine Museum of the New South is an interactive museum housing the nation’s most comprehensive interpretation of post-Civil War Southern history. The New South means people, places and a period of time – from 1865 to today and includes areas in the Southeast U.S. that began to grow and flourish after 1865.

The centerpiece of the Museum is the award-winning exhibition, Cotton Fields to Skyscrapers: Charlotte and the Carolina Piedmont in the New South. The exhibit, covering 8,000 square feet, features Charlotte and its 13 surrounding counties as a case study to illustrate the profound changes in the South since the Civil War. Attendees will be able to step inside a one-room tenant farmer’s house; run a hand through a pile of cotton seed; listen to the churning of the cotton mill; play checkers on the front porch of a mill house; sit in Good Samaritans Hospital Chapel, one of the first African-American hospitals in the South; and walk down main street and try on a hat in an early Belk department store.

Our featured entertainment for the evening, singer/guitarist, David Davol, will complement the relaxed evening with his acoustic guitar and vocals highlighting the folk rock style of the 60’s and 70’s, with music from artists like James Taylor, The Eagles, and Crosby, Stills & Nash. Also featured will be the best of modern country and western music, with selections from artists Alan Jackson, Garth Brooks, and Willie Nelson.

This year’s reception honors SMA President Braxter P. Irby, Jr., MD of Brookhaven, Mississippi and SMA Alliance President, Mrs. Donna Gosney of Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Please join your friends and colleagues for a superb evening of music and enjoyment with a night out in Charlotte!
